TUTORS FOR 2012

Ann Brocas is an enthusiastic embroiderer and enjoys many different types of embroidery. She is interested in exploring the history and techniques of embroidery. Ann enjoys tutoring and sharing her knowledge with students and seeing their progress.

Gaynor Chronicanhas been teaching embroidery techniques in the Otago region, and also further afield, over the past years. She has been invited to take part in master classes with Jan Beaney, Jean Littlejohn, Anthea Godfrey, Margaret Nicholson and Christine Bishop. This year she attended a class at Hampton Court. Gaynor enjoys all types of embroidery but particularly raised work.

Lynette Crowther has been a member of the Aoraki Embroiderers’ Guild for many years. She has enjoyed embroidery since her mother taught her as a young child. Lynette has completed an ANZEG Tutor’s course and now enjoys tutoring her own designs in a number of techniques.

Gay Eaton enjoys both innovative and traditional styles of needlework and has taught embroidery for many years around New Zealand and Australia. Gay has published three books; “Ukrainian Whitework”, “Wessex Stitchery” plus “Techniques and Tools of Embroidery” to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the OEG Wanaka School of Embroidery, of which she is the founder.

Elizabeth Edie enjoys the challenge of creating original embroideries using techniques learned in the workshops she has attended over many years.
Experimenting with mixed media is of particular interest.

Liz Fleming has sewn, hand embroidered and machine embroidered since she was a little girl making clothes for her dolls (the machine embroidered shorts still survive!) Since then she has learned traditional and contemporary techniques from many talented local, national and overseas tutors. Colour and texture are important features of her work. Liz tutors at Otago Embroiderers’ Guild monthly meetings, May Day and has also tutored at the Wanaka School in 2008.

Julie Hennessy is addicted to anything textile related and is currently hooked on the possibilities of felted fabric in applique for garments, bags etc. When mixed with the contrasting textures of velvets and smooth cottons there are endless options for beautiful embellishments.

Annie Huntleystudied fashion at Emily McPherson College for 3 years, then worked as pattern maker and grader. She moved to Queensland and taught fashion at Taffe for 7 years and became interested in the Creative Needlework course being taught there. She completed the course then finished up teaching Creative Needlework. Annie went on to travelling and teaching and started her own business called “Room for Threads” specialising in threads and specialty embroidery supplies.

Colleen Kelly is an avid embroiderer, quilter and textile artist. Her medium is threads, fabric, paint, beads and anything else that she can use to bring her work to life. She prefers to design her own work, but also loves the challenge of reproducing heritage patterns.

Jane Lester has been a member of the Hawke’s Bay Embroiderers’ Guild for years during which time she has been able to indulge her passion for surface stitchery. Thirteen years ago she undertook the ANZEG Tutors’ Training Course and recently did it again. Jane has been tutoring for the last 10 years or so and particularly enjoys teaching beginners.

Margaret Light is a well known tutor who has worked in the needlework field in Australia for sixteen years. Her interest in early forms of surface stitching led to private study in the UK in 2002.

Irene McDiarmid has ‘6th Form Certificate’ in embroidery and has been tutoring since 1998. She enjoys teaching and passing on her skills, particularly to beginners.

Lesley McIntosh is a member of the Central Otago Embroiderers’ Guild. She enjoys both machine and hand sewing and is happy to share her knowledge and love of embroidery with others.

Eunice McLeod is an accomplished needlewoman and experienced tutor who belongs to the Otago Embroiderers’ Guild. In 2008 Eunice was the guest exhibitor in the Otago Guild exhibition where the full range of her skills was displayed to the delight of everyone. Eunice has tutored at Wanaka for several years and particularly enjoys traditional embroidery.

Nikki Mortimer has a special interest in traditional counted thread work. Exploring past stitch and design traditions are providing new challenges. She is a member of the Otago Embroiderers’ Guild and enjoys sharing her needlework skills and ideas with others.

Jean Mulholland has been interested in needlework since a young child. She joined the Otago Embroiderers’ Guild in December 1995 after 3 years in the Southland Guild in the 1980’s. She has previously taught classes at guild level.

Dianne van Brandenburg studied Graphic Art and worked within the art industry as a textile designer and in advertising.  She has been involved in art projects at schools, helps at Queenstown Embroidery Guild and has often run classes.  This will be Dianne’s third year as a tutor at Wanaka.
